In Dortmund a normal door opening in the daytime usually costs between 70 and 120 euros; in the evening, at night or on weekends it is more like 130 to 200 euros. If someone promises you 15 euros on the phone and then suddenly wants 450 at your door, you have run into a rogue provider. That is the whole trick. And I am going to show you how to see through it before it costs you money.
I am Marie and I work in the dispatch office. I take the calls and coordinate which of our people goes where. On an ordinary Friday evening dozens of calls come in here, and within the first few seconds I can hear whether someone is just annoyed at their door or genuinely in a panic because the child is alone in the flat or the stove is still on. Prices are my daily bread. So let us talk straight.
What a door opening in Dortmund really costs
The price comes down to three things: time of day, the state of the door and the effort involved. A door that has simply latched shut often opens in two minutes. A locked door with the multi-point locking pushed up is real work. Here are the ranges you should realistically expect in Dortmund:
| Situation | Realistic price |
|---|---|
| Door merely latched, daytime | 60 to 100 euros |
| Door locked, daytime | 90 to 140 euros |
| Door opening, evening/weekend | 130 to 200 euros |
| Door opening, night/holiday | 160 to 240 euros |
| Callout within Dortmund | often included, otherwise 0 to 30 euros |
These are market ranges, not guarantees. Anyone who quotes you an exact price to the cent over the phone without seeing the door is either very optimistic or luring you. What is reputable is an honest range plus the line: if it turns out more complicated, I will tell you on site before I start. That is exactly how we do it. What the individual services cost you can also see in our service overview, so you know what we are talking about beforehand.
The rogue provider's trick
The consumer advice centre has been warning about this for years, and I see the victims every week. The pattern is almost always the same. You google "locksmith Dortmund" at night, at the top there is an ad reading "door opening from 19 euros, there in 15 minutes". You call, a friendly voice confirms everything. Then a driver turns up who is neither local nor from the region, opens the door in three minutes and demands 380 euros in cash. Supposedly for a "special opening", a "weekend surcharge", "special tools". You are standing in the hallway, you just want to get in, and you pay.
The red flags that let you spot an outfit like this in advance:
- Bait prices like "from 19 euros" or "from 9 euros callout". No honest business in Dortmund works for that.
- No fixed address in the region, only an 0800 or mobile number. Ask where the company is based. If you get mumbling, hang up.
- The driver wants cash only and issues no proper receipt with company name and tax number.
- On the phone every question about price is brushed off: "the colleague will see that on site." A reputable service gives you a range.
If you realise on site that you are being ripped off, sign nothing and, if in doubt, pay under protest. Note the number plate. The police prevention service and the consumer advice centre of North Rhine-Westphalia have clear guidance on how to challenge inflated bills. Profiteering is not a trivial offence.
How to recognise a reputable service before it arrives
Good news: recognising it takes thirty seconds on the phone. A reputable business gives you a company name, a price range and an honest arrival time. We say, for instance: "In the Nordstadt we are usually with you in twenty minutes; during the day the opening is between 90 and 140, and if the cylinder has to be swapped I will tell you beforehand." Clear statement, no surprise.
Another sign: a local service knows Dortmund. It knows that the drive out to Scharnhorst in the north-east takes longer than into Innenstadt-West, and it will not promise five minutes across the whole city. Anyone who quotes you miracle times is lying about the price too. Everything about our door opening and how we work is on the service page, and the prices for the whole of Dortmund we have summarised on the city page.
Last week in the Kreuzviertel
A case from last week, because it shows what matters. A young woman in the Kreuzviertel, which belongs to Innenstadt-West, calls at half past eight in the evening. Flat door latched shut, keys left inside, shopping still on the stairs. She had almost ended up with one of those bait providers, but hung up at the last moment because the "from 19 euros" seemed off to her. Wise instinct. I told her: a latched period-building door, we usually do that for around 110 euros at that hour, my colleague will be there in twenty minutes. He opened the door in four minutes with the shim technique, no damage. 110 euros, receipt, done. That is exactly the difference from 380 in cash.
And in Hörde, a different case
It was different recently in Hörde, down by the Phoenix lake. A man had locked up, pulled the door shut, and then found that the key had snapped off inside the cylinder, a cheap second key he had had copied somewhere. That was no longer a plain opening. Here the cylinder had to be replaced because the fragment blocked the keyway. My colleague said on site: opening 120, new security cylinder 75, comes to just under 200 together. The man swallowed hard for a moment, but it was correct and announced beforehand. That is exactly what reputable looks like: the price rises because the work rises, not because someone is fleecing you.
Locked out and in a hurry?
Price quoted up front, vetted partner business, ~22 minutes on site.
Latched or locked: why that sets the price
Many people do not know the difference, and it decides twenty to sixty euros. Latched means you have only pulled the door to, the latch has caught but it is not locked. That usually opens in minutes with a thin card or a shim. Locked means you or someone turned the key twice, the bolt is out, and on modern doors the whole multi-point locking is engaged. That is more effort, and sometimes it only works by drilling when the cylinder will not cooperate.
My tip on the phone, and I ask everyone this: did you only pull it shut or did you lock it? If you know that, I can give you a far more precise range. And if you do not know, that is fine too; we reckon with the more likely case and correct it honestly on site.
When an opening turns into more
Sometimes the door is open but the lock is finished. A worn-out cylinder, worn mechanics, or it was an attempted break-in and the frame is damaged. Then we are talking about a lock replacement or about additional burglary protection. It does not have to happen right away, but honestly: if your cylinder already catches during a normal unlocking, it is due. A security cylinder with drill protection and an emergency function costs 50 to 120 euros as a part, and fitting is often quick.
What I want you to take away: do not let anyone talk you into something you do not need, but do not close your eyes either when the hardware really is at the end. A good service shows you the wear and leaves the decision to you.
Frequently asked questions
What does a door opening in Dortmund cost at night? Realistically 160 to 240 euros for a locked door, depending on the effort. A merely latched door is below that. Anything that sounds much cheaper on the phone is usually a bait price.
Do I have to show ID? Yes, and that is a good sign. A reputable service only opens if you can credibly show you are entitled to, usually with ID or a registration certificate. Anyone who opens any door for a total stranger without proof works sloppily.
Can I get a fixed price beforehand? A solid range, yes; an exact fixed price without having seen the door is rarely reputable. We give the range and say before starting if it will be more.
Do I pay cash or is card accepted? With us both work and you always get a receipt with the company name. Anyone who wants cash only and gives no receipt is a warning sign.
How quickly is someone there? Within Dortmund usually between fifteen and thirty minutes, depending on the district and time of day. Into Innenstadt-Nord we are faster than into the outer districts. Questions about the process and cost we also answer in advance on our FAQ page.
My bottom line
A door opening in Dortmund is no reason to panic and certainly no reason to part with three hundred euros. Call a service that gives you a name, a range and an honest time. Hang up if someone lures you with 19 euros and stonewalls on the price. And if it has to be quick, you can reach us around the clock through the emergency service. I am usually the voice on the other end, and I will tell you honestly what it costs before anyone sets off.
